Dodge Charger 2007 2.7- Should I Get it?

I'm thinking about getting a Dodge Charger 2007. The affordable Chargers are all 2.7 Engines. I have read that 2.7 engines aren't the best because they are small for a big car. What do you guys recommend? Do I have to dish out 2,000 dollars more for a 3.5? Please Help

  1. THE 2.7 ENGINE IS FINE FOR THAT CAR, BUT BE SURE TO USE FACTORY SPECIFIED OIL WEIGHT WHEN CHANGING OIL, 5W30 I THINK. THIS ENGINE IS BUILT TO VERY CLOSE TOLERANCES, SO PROPER MAINT. IS REQUIRED!! CHANGE OIL & TRANS FLUID WHEN RECOMMENDED PER OWNERS MANUAL. HOPE THIS HELPED.           SIGNED; DODGE AUTO TECH 10 YEARS  P.S. I DRIVE TOYOTA'S

  2. Yes it is true the 2.7 motor doesn't have enough power for a heavy car like the Charger. The engine will have to work harder to accelerate, which will actually use more gas. Plus the 3.5 would be smoother and quieter accelerating. Its good you only want the car for school use and you won't be speeding or racing. That shows maturity. However the 3.5 might be a better option, cause you never know when you might that extra power to merge with traffic on the freeway or something. Plus the engine won't work as hard as the 2.7, so you should save some gas. I think the 3.5 V6 is your best option. For adequate performance and fuel economy.

  3. If you do get the 2.7, get an extended warranty on the engine. The only problem I've ever seen with them is the water pumps. The problem is, the water pump is inside the engine driven by the timing chain. When the water pump go's out it takes the whole engine with it because it fills the crankcase full of metal and antifreeze!

  4. If you are looking for a basic, affordable car, then why the Charger? You could get a Mazda 3 (with the 2.3) or a Scion TC with the same performance as the 3.5 Charger but with better gas mileage. I have a Magnum with the 3.5 and these were 2 of the cars I researched. Almost bought the Mazda 3 hatchback but was able to get a 1 year old lease-return Magnum for 10 grand less than a new one. I get average 25 mpg hwy which isn't bad. The 2.7 while adequate in the LH's is too small for the LX's really. With the 2.7 though, figure about 27 mpg hwy.

  5. the newer designed 2.7 is the improved version and is a lot better than the older ones, the 2.7 was always a good running engine, their never was a problem with power or running it was the design of it that made it bad for building up sludge and having a very short life span, the charger is a nice car,i have drove several with the newer 2.7 and they are good cars,i think you,d like the way they run and drive, get one you wont be disappointed in it,i drove one today after servicing it,and i like them, each year the charger improves, good luck.

  6. If you only need something basic, why by an (almost) new car?

But if you're just going to and from school, there's no use in paying more for the 3.5 if you don't plan on using the car to go fast.
