Dodge Gr Caravan - speedometer stopped working won't shift out of second gear - any ideas?

Our 2000 Gr Caravan (93,000 mi) was working fine, then suddenly it stopped shifting out of second gear, and the speedometer stopped working. That happened sort of gradually, first it seemed stuck at 15 mph, then 10, now it doesn't move at all. Service engine light came on as we pulled into home, not at first. I'd love to hear that I can just turn it on and off or something easy. Any ideas would be helpful!

  1. Falco, the output speed sensor is bad. You can varify this by turning the key ; on/off on/off and on and leave the key on. The dash will display a code starting with the letter P followed by 4 numbers(p0421). Yahoo DTC's (diagnostic trouble codes) and see if it fits. Easy to replace sensor. Dealer part only. Hope this helps    TW

PS You may restart van and have no problems!

  2. I would have to say a visit to the dealer would be in order, you have a defective Speedometer or speed sensor in the transmission, check with your dealer's Service department and arrange an appointment. the problem can be a simple sensor or a complicated transmission job. Only a properly equipped technician can properly diagnose the issue and suggest and or repair it.
