  1. I grew up listening to him. Some of my greatest memories are listening to his play by play with my dad. I would say he is one of the greatest sportscasters in history. Don't listen to the guys who's hero is a cheater and a liar who has tainted the game of baseball.

  2. A tie with the late great Chick Hearn, voice of the Lakers!!

Edit- I am an Angel fan, that thinks our announcers are sometimes too over the top( Rex Hudler)

I like Vin because he calls the game like he's having a personal conversation with the listener. He doesn't need any gimmicks or doesn't make the game boring.

  3. Dodgers suck dude.

Barry Bonds: Greatest Hitter of ALL-TIME!!!!

    Scully is a bottom feeder

  4. Overrated. Half the time he just rambling on to hear the sound of his own voice. I don't get why people think he's so great. It's a joke. He's terrible.

  5. Oh my god, this is a joke right? These must be Dodgers fans, because people who actually know about baseball know that Scully is a horrible announcer. From the boring voice, to the one sided opinions he has during the game, and the fact that he NEVER SHUTS UP (someone should tell him that ALL of the info on the player sheets does not need to be said) he is just terrible.

Famous Scully quote- " Benito Santiago stands in at the plate, batting from the right hand side. Benito used to own and drive a Yellow convertible sports car until he was involved in a serious car accident. Now he drives a heavily powered Humvee." Like seriously did we need to know that? This story was actually much longer and took up almost all of the inning, but you get the point, IDIOT!

  6. Wow, there are some serious tards answering. Of course he's the greatest. When he says, "It's Time For Dodger Baseball!" that just makes my whole day. I'm just worried about when he'll retire. The Dodger games won't be the same without him. Giants fans, your announcers are horrible! I was watching a feed from San Fran and actually muted the tv because they were so boring. Some people don't know what greatness is.

  7. greatest next to harry carry

  8. greatest

  9. I love Vin Scully...especially when he does the Simpsons episodes.

"He's had 6 errors, struck out twice and swallowed a bee"

  10. I grew up listening to Vin Scully and, in my opinion, he is the greatest.

  11. I don't know if you can really have a "greatest" announcer of all time simply because the truly great ones all have their own style.

Scully definitely is in that very elite class of broadcasters however, that actually understands how to describe a game. The folks that are critical of someone with his style have provbably been nrought up on televised baseball rather then actually listening to a radio call fairly often, and have had announcers who tend to use cute little phrases such as "he gone" "duck snort", etc., or who seem to think that the fans are tuning in to see how clever they can be, or who tend to over analyze the game with the use of meaningless statistics (here comes Manny Ramirez, who is hitting .412 with runners in scoring position in games played in the Pacific time zone on Wednesdays against left handed pitchers with 7 letters in their last name.)

Scully's style is really a byproduct of 2 things. First being that he is a radio guy through and through. The object of a radio man and a TV man in broadcasting a game is completely different. The TV man is simply adding to the picture the viewer is seeing, while the radio man must actually attempt to create that picture in the listener's mind. As for Scully talking constantly,  keep in mind that he works alone usually. He can't simply sit back and wait for a color man to fill a moment or two while he sits back and listens.

I'm guessing that most of the fans under the age of 25 or so will NEVER understand what makes Scully one of the best at his craft. These are the same types who will put someone like Chris Berman, Chip Caray or Jon Miller up on a pedestal for the simple reason that they are more about style then substance. The same generation will probably also never appreciate anyone from Scully's generation - whether it be Harry Caray, Jack Brickhouse, Ernie Harwell, Bob Prince, Mel Allen, Red Barber or any of dozens of others who could actually paint a picture with their words. It's a shame they've missed out on them.

  12. He's one of the best, but not the best there ever was.
