Dodgers Take Down ‘Mannywood’ Sign
The trade deadline may have passed but that doesn’t mean players will all necessarily stay where they are. Players can still be waived and then traded, meaning certain players are not out of the red zone yet.
One player being linked with a possible move is Manny Ramirez, who’s recovering from a strained calf and is on the disabled list.
It has been revealed recently that the Los Angeles Dodgers have sold the left field ad space that has held the sign Mannywood since the slugger was traded to the Dodgers in 2008. The sign has been there to primarily advertise Manny Ramirez. The space was owned by John Hancock and radio station KABC.
The team is denying any suggestions that this means Ramirez will be waived or dropped.
"That space has been for sale all season. We recently sold it so that's why the sign is no longer there," Dodgers spokesman Josh Rawitch said. "The promotion is still available for purchase, the two T-shirts and two tickets in that section for $99 is still in place."
Ramirez has struggled to stay healthy this year. This is his third stint on the disabled list and he’s signed under a very expensive contract, worth $20 million for the year. So far this season, he has played only 61 games in which he hit eight home-runs and 39 RBIs, while accumulating a batting average of .317.
The team’s General Manager Nick Colletti admitted that he explored some offers for Ramirez before the trade deadline, as several teams inquired about his return date. None of the offers were sufficient though to deal the slugger.
Ramirez will only be eligible for the team to place him on waivers once he’s off the disabled list, at which point, the team may trade him. The question is, which team would be willing to pay the rest of his lucrative salary?
