Dodig/Troicki overcome Bellucci/Giraldo to reach the quarter-finals – Swiss Indoor Basel 2011
In the opening round of doubles category at the Davidoff Swiss Indoors Basel, the Croatian-Serb combination of Ivan Dodig and Viktor Troicki outplayed the unseeded duo of Thomaz Bellucci from Brazil and Santiago Giraldo from Colombia
on Tuesday evening.
The winning pair took merely 64 minutes of play to take down their opponents in three sets, 6-3, 3-6, 10-5, booking a place in the quarter-finals of the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Tour 500 event.
The contest was staged on the indoor hard courts of the St. Jakobshalle in Basel, Switzerland, with the two duos displaying a brilliant show of quality tennis to entertain the local crowd. Dodig and Troicki were off to an excellent
start in the opening set, blowing away their opponent in a convincing manner. Tide turned in the very next set when Bellucci and Giraldo came out firing at them and took away the second set to bring them back on even terms again. A super tie breaker round
came into play, with Dodig and Troicki taking the better of their opponents in the last moments of the game to come out as the winner.
Bellucci and Giraldo closely followed their opponents in every segment of the game but they missed out a number of precious opportunities to finish on the losing side. Dodig and Troicki delivered just 55 per cent of their first
serve on target but dropped just three points on it, clinching 27 out of 30, in the entire matchup to stand tall in the end.
Dodig and Troicki made their first move of the match in the opening set, breaking Bellucci and Giraldo to take the upper hand in the competition. They held on to their lead to close out the first set at 6-3 but went through a sudden
slump in the very next set to let their opponents come on top. Bellucci and Giraldo shifted to a more aggressive approach and nailed one serve break to close out the second set at 6-3, levelling the matchup at 1-1.
The decider was pretty much dominated by Dodig and Troicki, who faced limited resistance from their opponents to race away to a convincing victory at 10-5.
Dodig and Troicki will either take on the third seeded pair of Christopher Kas of Germany and Alexander Peya of Austria or the unseeded duo of Santiago Gonzalez of Mexico and Scott Lipsky of the United States, in the quarter-final
clash to make it through to the final four of the tournament.
