  1. no, you can have a 5speed automatic transmission or a manual one. the manual has the clutch.  but i believe most people think of a manual when you say 5 speed though

  2. No, the number of gears a car has, has no bearing on weather it is a manual or automatic transmission.

  3. No.

The number of speeds is just that. The number of gears in the transmission (+ reverse)

All cars have a clutch, but I think you are referring to the clutch pedal you operate with your left foot. That would be referred to as a manual transmission. The other kind is an automatic transmission.

That's been the way it's been for a long time. The lines are getting more blurred right now. In some cars now you can have a transmission that works both ways. "manu-matic" or some other trade name. To make matters even more confusing some manuals now do not have a "clutch"

  4. Not necessarily. You can have a 5 speed automatic also.

  5. every 5 speed has a clutch but having a clutch does not make it a 5 speed

  6. No.. If you said 5 speed manual transmission then yes...

  7. yes and no all trannys have clutches a 5 speed can be in a automatic tranny or a manual tranny

  8. 5 speeds have manual clutches.  But so do 4 speeds, 6 speeds and even older 3 speeds.

  9. Nope it doesn't matter if it is 4,,5,,,6 speed there is automatic and manual for that type of transmission

  10. Nope, it could be either way, manual or automatic.

  11. no 5 speed transmission  means the car has 5 gears. they now make 6 speed transmissions. some are automatic and some are manual.

  12. Nope! There are quite a few newer cars with 5 speed automatic transmissions. Here is a link to just one: http://www.carseek.com/reviews/toyota/20...   but there are many more on the market besides this one. GM and Ford are now offering 6 speed transmissions.

  13. Often when people refer to a car as a "five speed" they mean it is a manual transmission, but it can refer to an automatic as well.

    Edit:

What the heck is wrong with my answer? The majority of the time when a car is referred to as "five speed" without specifying auto or manual like in a classified ad, you can assume it is a manual.

  14. There are 5 speed automatic transmissions and 5 speed manual transmissions.

The manuals use a clutch which allows you to shift gears.

  15. in most cases yes

  16. No, not necessarily. There are 5 speed automatic (no clutch pedal) transmissions, and 5 speed manual transmissions. The description should indicate which it is.
