I am buying a house that was built around 1910 am concerned. Is it safe to remove the wallpaper ( it looks really old and is textured with some sort of cameo like raised print). Should I be concerned about the plaster and plumbing? I am asking because I would like to have kids wihin the next 2-3 years and do not want to risk it. Any ideas on cost if it can be helped?

  1. My guess is that it's not the wallpaper or the plaster you would have to be concerned with, but the paint.

The problem with lead paint would be if you sand it and make dust or if your kids eat the paint chips.  You may find old electrical boxes built right into the walls that may be aligned with asbestos.  Once again the problem with asbestos would be causing it to be air born.

Call or write to an Industrial Hygientist for verification of my information and your safety concernes.
