The BBC report in the South Asia news column has the following to say about the decision to get rid of the slums around Mumbai airport:.

Mumbai -an estimated 60% of the city's 12 million people live in slums and shanty towns

  1. I don't think 60% is the right answer.  I lived in Mumbai for 4+ years and have visited lot of different areas in Mumbai.  I would say it is 30% or less.  There are lots of apartment complexes that do not have proper enough facilities, but I wouldn't categorize those as slums.


  2. I suspect it's even more than that. But it depends on what  your definition of "slum" is, what survey you're reading, and what that survey was supposed to prove in the first place.

    All these statistics are subjective.

    Edit: In regard to the comment below, it goes back to what you categorise as a "slum." What's considered a "slum" in the US or the UK is different to what's considered a slum in India. I just checked a couple of surveys on this, and the consensus seems to be around half the population. (so less than 60%) Whatever the statistics, there are a lot of people living in poor conditions...
