Question:

Does A/C (lack of humidity) kill palmetto bugs?

My dad is trying to make me feel better about the fact that there's been a giant palmetto bug in my room since last night, god knows where at this point. He claims a pest control guy told him they die within a day or two in the A/C...but from everything I've read online that is not the case.

Anybody know? Especially if you are in the pest control business that would be so helpful!

  1. Anyone who says that is crazy or doesn't have a clue. As a long time south florida resident i can tell you for sure that a/c does not kill roaches and they're not going to die in a few days. Dessication can kill insects but either you'd have to be someplace exceedingly dry for a very long time with no access to moisture (can't think of anywhere right off hand - maybe a desert to which palmetto bugs are not native) or you have to crack their shells which allows the moisture to escape their bodies which can result in the bug dying.

The best way to get rid of the bug is to wait until it comes out of hiding and smash it. Just an fyi that they do fly around and night and sometimes land on sleeping people (yes, i know from experience).

  2. It would take awhile (and by awhile I mean weeks at least) for it to die from the A/C. Insects are very good at finding moisture, (ex: sinks, tubs, etc.) The only thing A/C would do (and that depends on what temp. you've got it set on) is slow the roach down. Get your broom ready and know that your Dad has good intentions.  :)
