Question:

Does ABC's "World News Tonight" prove Americans don't care about the rest of the world?

I live in the UK and the BBC air ABC's World News Tonight at 1:30 in the morning on weekdays. Today's "world" news had 8 out of 11 news reports about America only!!! Even the stories that were about foreign affairs was how they affect the USA. I can tell you now that American only news is not world news!!

This is direct contrast to BBC news whose headlines were 12 out of 15 foreign news and none were the same as the american domestic news on ABC.

Is this the fault of ABC for the misleading program title or is it that Americans are so isolationist that they just don't care about foreign stories?

  1. The program title is just a title; don't put too much stock into it.

That said, though, American news does concentrate a little too much on America. We tend to be a little insulated over here. ABC tried to change things a little when Peter Jennings was the anchor; he had a great deal of foreign reporting experience. I would assume that has changed a bit since his death.

  2. I personally believe it's ABC's fault. I watch CNN and read Yahoo! News all the time. They both tell everything how it is.

  3. When I was on holiday the other week, the tv in our room had CNN. It was like the day after the whole Russia/Georgia thing started and the reporter said something like "Russia has invaded Georgia-obviously this will have a catastrophic impact on the US". All that they talked about was how it was affecting America! It was all down to oil naturally, but there was no mention of how it was affecting the Georgians-but oh my God! Those poor Americans potentially not getting their precious oil!

They were having a big fit over how bad it was for America and it made me so angry, they acted like the Georgians just weren't important and that the whole world revolved around America. I had to switch over to BBC World to get a balanced report.
