Question:

Does ATT try to Scam?

I think ATT tried to scam me:

Three weeks ago I was told I could downgrade my residential service to "Stand Alone DSL" for $19.95 a month (this is basic DSL without a phone).

Today when I called to go ahead with the "Stand Alone DSL" phone rep #1 tells me it is not available, and that what I wanted would cost ~$37.95/month. I insisted that I was quoted a price of $19.95/month for "stand alone DSL", but could not convince the guy to recheck his facts.

I hung up, then held again for 20-30 minutes and spoke to phone rep #2. Except this time I said, "I am thinking of **canceling** my service", now this time rep #2 cheerfully confirms the availability of 'Stand Alone DSL' for $19.95/month.

Sounds like scammy used car dealers to me; what do you think? One misinformed rep? OR standard sales tactic?

  1. the first guy was probably new. dont stress....

  2. I thought from their website that DSL for $19.95 is only available if you have phone services with AT&T? I had the DSL Ultra and was surprised to find an additional $5 on my bill! When I called they told me that charge was for the access to phone line. Don't be surprised if your bill turns out higher than expected because the Stand Alone really isn't that per se....you just pay an additional fee to access the phone line.
