Does Adding Foil to an antenna make the reception stronger?

I was just wondering if adding foil to indoor antennas add any signal strength. I know those stories about wearing foil hats and all, but does it actually work?

It only works if the antennas are on a hat...then you can pick up radio stations.  A football helmet works very well.

If it did work then don't you think that the antenna manufacturers would incorporate it into their designs ?. afraid its just another old wives tale !!!!
