Question:

Does Anthem (Blue Cross of California) cover Lap Band Surgey?

I am considering the lap band surgery, but don't know if my insurance has a habit of covering it. Technically it is covered under my policy if deemed medically necessary, but I don't know the likelyhood of being approved. I have been talking to my doctor about it, so I just want to know if anyone who has Blue Cross of CA which is now called Anthem has had any experience with getting the surgery covered or not. Thanks!!

  1. You really need to call your health insurance company. They will be able to tell you what the guidelines are for considering weight loss surgery "medically necessary".

I had surgery on my nose to correct a deviated septum last year. My doctor submitted the paper work on the surgery and that it was medically necessary. I did not have to do anything to get the surgery approved. My doctor got the approval. Then I got a letter in the mail saying it was approved.

If you do have surgery- make sure you ask if your hospital, anesthesiologist are all in network. Just because the surgeon is - does not mean the others are. Check that out before surgery is done and you get big bills.
