  1. You read, discuss, and analyze works by major American writers and poets; some examples of these writers might be: Ernest Hemingway, Emily Dickinson, F. Scott Fitzgerald, Walt Whitman, Maya Angelou, John Steinbeck, William Faulkner, Pearl S. Buck, Toni Morrison, Eugene O'Neill, Sinclair Lewis, Isaac Bashevis Singer.

There are many writers that you could possibly study but you probably will encounter at least a couple in the above list during your course. The course will involve lots of reading and writing; you will be expected to take part in class discussions, and you will probably be writing papers for your grade as opposed to taking tests.

Warning: don't read "Cliff Notes" or anything like that, or try to fake your way out of reading the required works because your professor WILL know. That, and plagiarism, is the quickest way to get an F in that class. You will get a good grade if you thoroughly read the works, develop an opinion about them, express that opinion in class and turn in well-written papers.

    Good luck and have fun!
