Does Anyone Really Like Australian Wine??

I work in the wine industry in Oz and we keep getting told that Aust wine is very fashionable in the US and Canada.

Is this true? What are your favourite wines styles and wine regions from Aust? Did you know NZ makes great wine too?

  1. I buy Australian wine only.  Tried and tested and never fails me.  But then I know which ones are decent and which ones are cheap and nasty.

  2. Excellent wines!

My two favorite areas now are: Barossa Valley for reds and Clare Valley for whites.

Mr. Powell of Torbreck will be your new superstar, imo, although Sparky Marquis appears to be getting a bit full of himself (a $400 Shiraz??...jeez).  Lehmann, Tait, Greenock Creek, Leng and Cooter - all great wines.

And imo Casella wines Pty should be run out of Australia...Yellow Tail is an abomination.

    Keep on making great juice!.

  3. I love both Aust wines and NZ wines, I enjoy most any wine from either region. Started drinking Yellow Tail Shiraz about 5 yrs ago and still like it.

  4. banrock station do some decent wines esp the shiraz mataro

dog ridge too, tho i did have a sauvignon with a bouquet like an aborigine's armpit

  5. Aussie shiraz is just excellent.  Rosemount & Marquis Philips come to mind.  Sarah's Blend rocks.

New Zealand sauvignon blancs from the Marlborough region are fantastic, especially Kim Crawford.

I think the reason you may perceive it as fashionable is because any Aussie wine better than Yellow Tail pretty much fly off the shelves in the U.S.  And that's because it's just really good.

  6. I agree with Gerry, I have several bottles of Jacob's Creek Cabernet Shiraz, and enjoy it thoroughly.

I am not a bit fan of the Yellowtail brand though.

  7. Australia produces some good wines.  Yes,  I like those.  I don't think they make the best wines, but, I like some of them.  I like some of their Shiraz, for example.
