Many public libraries have a subscription to ancestry.com which you can use for free.

First, try finding a website devoted to your family name.  I found so much information about my ancestors on the Combs Family Website.  A search engine should get you there.

Next use your location to find information.  GenWeb typically has some very informative websites based on the state and county you are researching.  http://usgenweb.org/

You can also try to use forums based on your family name and/or location, but those are pretty hit or miss.  

If you are living in the county that you are researching, the best FREE research you could do would be at your local library.  Most libraries have a decent genealogy section.  They might charge you a quarter to copy records, but otherwise it is free.  Good luck!

I have been using familysearch.org and found a ton of info on there. It's been prety good, only a few things have been off.
