  1. I strongly suggest you google "social service agencies [your city]" as soon as possible. Or "homeless services [your city]." There should be at least some information on what's available in your area.

  2. Homeless shelter would be my best guess!!! Sorry not much help!

  3. I know that the salvation army here offers overnight boarding for free.

Depends on where you are located if there is a "homeless" facility.

  4. Do you have a family or are you by yourself?  This isn't a problem if you're alone.  Get a job where you live in.  Such as a live in care taker of a handicapped person, or live in nanny or live in house keeper.  You can only do this if you have a good reputation and have great references.  There are some job placement services who refer you to live in situations.

House sit for some people while they go on vacation.  Remember you can only do this if you are a reliable, trustworthy person.  My mom used to say...a good reputation is better than all the money in the world!  If you lose your money, its no big deal but if you lose your reputation and cheerful attitude, you've lost it all!

There is a place called "RENT A MOM" and "RENT A DAD" who hire live in people.  You'd be surprised how much people will do for you if you are willing to do for them as long as your reputation is good and you are a hard, reliable worker.  One family I worked for actually gave me a car to use to go look for work and agreed it was okay for me to find other work as long as I was available after 3:00 PM until midnight for them.  They even had a storage shed for me to put my things.

Be willing to clean, cook, baby sit, shuttle kids to sports practice, bathe children (or old people if necessary), read bed time stories, put bandaids on scrapped knees, wash dishes...anything.  Be the worlds greatest Nanny while looking for other jobs and don't leave your family stranded when you find your feet.  If they are there for you, you'll have to be there for them a little.

If you're a guy, find a live in handy man job...fixing plumbing, wiring, cars, painting or other odd jobs...they are out there and these are handy skills to keep you off the street.

    Been there, done that.

Thought of something else I did once...stay at a Youth Hostel such as American Youth Hostel but there are dozens of different ones.  They only cost about $14 a night and you can get a job working the desk checking people in and you can stay there for free and get a little cash on the side (after they get to know you and if you carry around a resume and references).  Its also a great way to network with people and find the big job eventually.  Get a spirit of adventure and not a spirit of defeat.  I did that one time and it was fun meeting international people and playing the intellectual, artistic hobo.

(I have all these ideas from personal experience.  I'm socially gifted and cheerful with an excellent reputation but I'm financially retarded and found myself in money squeezes all the time as a young person.  I had a hard time finding my feet as I had ZERO business sense.  I'm strictly a people person and those kind of people find themselves in difficult situations quite often.  Great references, great friends but bad luck with money.  I've been "homeless" half my life but never friendless or hopeless.)

That AF guy has some good ideas about working on a farm...once I was traveling and ran out of money and worked as a migrant worker for money and they let me stay on their cranberry farm in washington State and  worked grapes in California until I made it to where I was going to go to graduate school in Arizona. (Who says only immigrants work those jobs???)

The other thing to do, is to quickly enroll in a college.  When you are poor as I was in my 20's and divorced, I was able to get student Pell Grants and cheap loans and student work study.  If you're poor, there are lots of programs to help you and the college campus is a great place to be poor as all students are!

When I think back on it, those "hobo" years were the happiest years of my life.  I made a lot of friends while I was down on my luck and trying to find my feet.

Happy Hoboing!  (You won't always be a hobo...this too will change!  Chin up!)

  5. is there anything like crisis services in your area or can you apply to Belmont services on an emergency basis? Try social services if all else fails am pretty sure you can apply for emergency food stamps and go to a food bank at local churches to get available free food

  6. Here are acouple iof useful resources http://www.goodwillnmi.org/GoodwillInn/i... includes ideas on what you need to do if you will be homeless in a few days or afew weeks

http://www.nationalhomeless.org/index.ht...  many resources on help if facing homelessness

A number of homeless shelter directories so hopefully if need be you can find one near you  http://www.altavista.com/web/results?ita...

If you are about to be homeless and have kids talk with the school counselor about 1. family shelters and 2. resources for helping homeless students (homeless kids have a right to stay in their same school and to have help per federal law.  If you get a hassel on this go to website for national assn for education of homeless children and youth or to make it simpler click my name to email me.

First is homelessness inevitable and if so what degree of homelessness?  Meaning can you get an extention on staying where you are?  In 90=% of situations you do not have to get out till a court says to not just cause landlord says to tho there are times when just going may be the better thing.   Can you stay with family and friends for a few nights here and there? Is it warm enough and rural enough so you can camp?  Are you able to work?  Many motels offer room or room and board to desk clerks and maintenance or cleaning ppl.  This is most often true of ones owned by individuals not franchises but sometimes them too.   Some resorts do this too.  Someone else mentioned some other live in jobs so I won't repeat those but camps, farms including poultry farms, riding stables all often offer living quarters too.  Some of those are less concerned about  perfect references than the child or elder care jobs.   Some campgrounds have "hosts"who welcome guests etc in exchange for a free space and often free or cheap use of camper.

If you can stay awake at night try for a 3rd shift job...it keeps you off the street at night and in a safe dry place 5-6 nights a week.   This can be patient sitting in a hospital, work in a convelescent home, all night eatery, manufacturing, grocery, convenience store, any place open all night.   It is far less risky as to safety and possible hassels for being homeless or vagrant to work nights and sleep days.

If you have a car consider it portable shelter.   In most cases you can not park it for 8-10 hrs and sleep unhasseled at night.  Daytimes far less hassel.   if you need to do it at night look for crowded parking lots like WalMart or all night grocery and plan to move it every few hrs,  Much more detail on this in my answer at http://answers.yahoo.com/question/index;...  for a lot more details on getting by, getting food, taking a bath, etc.

Other preparation anything that is special to you find a place to put it that is safe - parent of trustable, storage iof you can keep it paid, safe deposit boxes are cheapif it is small enough.   A car trunk gives some working space but if yiou are on foot try to keep it to a sturdy back pack or 2 bags bec shelters limit what you can bring and what you can't keep in your hand or on your back will walk off.    Get your ID up to date.   Get any aid you can food stamps which are now a plastic card, unemployment, you may want to get a PO box while you still have an address they are pretty strict on that.  Consider getting a prepaid credit card or a bank account with debit card.   May be be safer than cash and is a goo0d way to prove you are not a vagrant  Somehow they seldom check the limit as long as they see plastic.  Get a cell phone if you can whatever one is cheapest in your area and a charger...if no vehicle you can plug a charger in a single person rest room for even 15 min and charge battery, charge it at work and prolly at a library or similar setting.  Get a Yahoo or hotmail type email so you can go to library and check mail w/o having to have a net service.   Speaking of libraries they do not like ppl to just hang out day after day of they think they are homeless...so limit time there and ask for reference help for something you are writing etc.   to the extent possible keep your "stuff"out of sight while there.

This may be way TMI but I really hope it helps.

  7. There is a homeless hotline. Each State probably has their own.

The Crisis center should be able to help you.

There may be shelters listed in the telephone book.

The Catholic Church in your area could probably refer you to some help.

    Good Luck...Things can always improve.

  8. Salvation Army assistance,  Union  Gospil  day  habs,  Ask where  food lines are  served,  Ask if  any  churches  are looking  for  help for trade for  food.  Thrift  stores  such  as  Amvets  have  connections,  ask  a  office  person for assistance of  a  list.  Good  luck,  *mamatx
