Question:

Does Astronomy make your more or less spiritual?

Does the study of astronomy make you believe that the universe created itself or that the universe has a creator? And please don't have any stupid arguments about whether there's a creator or not, i don't want any atheists bashing religious people and i don't want any religious people bashing atheists. Whatever anyone wants to believe is there own business, so no fighting here, just answer the question. Bickering with one another is pointless and doesn't get anyone anywhere. Thanks

  1. i am a HUGE space science kinda guy but also Roman Catholic but i don't think it would because i still believe there is a creator but i also believe in the big bang there for me believing "GOD" made the big bang happen

  2. Even though I am an atheist, I think your question is very interesting.

I get a sense of awe and wonder from astronomy that one might describe as being the same feeling people get through religion.  Ironically, though, it was astronomy which first got me thinking about the non-existence of God.  Eventually science freed me from mysticism.

So for me, "spiritual" is a colorful term for something that I regard as just one of the marvelous capabilities of the human mind.

  3. Less and less religious. More and more spiritual.

Especially the relationship of the macro and micro.   "The kingdom of God is within you." The singularity/theONE. The expansion of the ONE.

Even a belief in the "mind" is a spiritual belief. When was the last time anyone dissected and studied a mind?

To even posit the "minds" existence is a huge act of faith ;) IMO, of course.

  4. The cosmos screams "GOD".

  5. "The outcome of such work, we predict, will not bring science and religion (or 'spirituality') any closer to one another. You suggest that science may bring about "advances in theological thinking". In reality, the only contribution that science can make to the ideas of religion is atheism."

Taken from a letter to the journal Nature which was posted by PZ Meyers on his blog today - http://scienceblogs.com/pharyngula/2008/...

  7. That would depend on the person, some look into a telescope and see order and harmony and that is proof of a creator to them, there are others, myself included, who look at the universe and see no order, just the results of billions of years of gravity acting on hydrogen atoms.

  8. Studying astronomy has revealed to me no need for a creator, which is one of the reasons we don't bother contemplating it in science - the other reason being that there is no actual evidence for a creator.

  9. More.

  10. the more i learn about how the universe was made just makes me more and more spiritual. just the theory of the big bang itself makes me have to believe in a creator so grand and complex. ive read that at the moment of the big bang the first eliment created was hydrogen after particles cooled then came helium and because of dark matter the particles were able to stick to eachother enough to the point for gravity to take over. then came gient feilds of nebula, stars, planets, galexies..and here we are over 13 billion years later. praise the lord and its infinate power of creation! wow! knowing that makes me believe in god more than ever. many might not even to fathom the power of god. but thats just cuz we r so young and nieve. but that doesnt mean we shouldnt try. if we r created in gods image..then it is our destany to survive and grow and love our ways into the"heavens" i believe it is our destany and our future. and those who cant see that far into the future really must grow out of the box and the primitive soon to be obsolete way of thinking. we must evolve into the creators we were ment to be.  i think the only way to do that is to love and apreciate eachother sooner than later. cuz we always apreciate our suroundings more once they r gone, and i hope it doesnt take a world wide disaster for us to realise how precious we r. weather i like it or not i have a bad feeling thats what its gonna take for us to get our heads out of our asses and start thinking about eachother for a change. let us go into tomorrow fearless of change and open to love. peace be with us all : )

  11. If I have any feelings which can be called "spiritual", it is when I gaze into the night sky. These feelings have never led me to believe that the universe has any supernatural component.
