I am Australian and my grandparents were born in the UK, am I eligible for dual citizenship?

I heard that the two countries have an agreement where I am able to? Is this true?

Neither of my parents have British citizenship

  1. There is no such agreement, but there doesn't need to be.  Neither the UK nor Australia has any laws prohibiting dual citizenship, so if you are eligible for both, you can take both.

(But if you were not born in the UK, it's unlikely that you would be eligible.)

  2. Same for me, so I will be watching answers with interest! Thanks for the question.

  3. No. Your parent in question would be able to get British citizenship via descent but they wouldn't be able to pass it to you as it only can be passed down once via descent (although if you were born in the UK you could receive it).

Because of your situation and the fact that Australia is part of the Commonwealth you'd be entitled to an Ancestry Visa. That will get you five years in the UK. You'll have to do your time then apply. I believe you now need 6 years in the UK  for British citizenship but you can extend your Ancestry Visa. Either way you'd still be able to apply for Indefinate Leave to Remain.

Right of Abode mainly is for people who qualify for citizenship (as they have a parent born in the UK) but don't want citizenship (possibly because of conflict or they already have dual). It's cheaper to get citizenship than Right of Abode (the passport is $325 AUD compared to $510 AUD).

Australia and the UK both allow for dual citizenship

  4. You can have dual citizenship in Australia, always have been able to....

In relation to the Australian and UK dual citizenship, the rules are, if your parents have to be born in the UK and married you can gave a british passport. My father was born in the UK, I was born here in oz, i have a british passport. I have friend who have the same aswell.

Generally, you can't get citizenship through your grandparents.

all the information you need is here.

  5. it is not an agreement, but dual citizenship was not allowed before, for you had to give up your citizenship if you took another one. today many countries allow dual citizenship;without having to forfeit your original.

you may have UK citizenship, if you were either, born or trough# direct #descent such as your parent,or by naturalization.

not trough your grand parents only,

you may be granted residence # right to abode# since your grand parents were born in the UK and receive # indefinite leave# after 4 years.(meaning, entering, leaving the UK at your will, without having problems with the immigration.

if you were to live in the UK for 5 years , you could get naturalized as an UK citizen, after 5 years of residency.
