What is being Australian? What's the point of the test? Who, if anyone, are they trying to keep out?

  1. No they don't.  If you check the immigration site...they have a million ways to keep people out.  Australia is very selective in it's breeding policies.  That's probably why you rarely hear of terrorisim in Australia.  They have nothing anyone wants....so far.  I don't think Australia wants a whole bunch of immigrants at this time.  They have their hands full with football players.

  2. I just came back from a trip to Cambodia and I was greeted by two kids on the street who stopped me and asked where I came from. When I said Australia, they said told me who our prime minister was, our national anthem and our population. I didn't know our population, does that make them a possible better citizen then me? Sure, they wanted a dollar for the information, and I watched them do the same for American, English and French tourists, but they know our population!

To test people would be a dodgy throwback to the White Australia policy days and is irresponsible as a developed country to determine whether foreigners can become one of us based on a middle-upper level caucasian idea of what it is to be Australian.

A lot of people argue that speaking English should be compulsory, but we cannot deny the contributions that people who immigrate to this country from NESB make.

  3. They don't want to keep people out. they want the people who come in to adopt the australian way.

  4. they arent trying to keep anyone out...any old psyco can come in now, the test is just to pacify anyone who is dumb enough to think that the government actually gives a hoot as to who they let in.
