I might be moving to Berkeley California soon. Do they have a ride sharing system there? What I mean is where people stand on certain designated corners, and motorists who pass can stop to give them rides. Thanks.

  1. Besides the mass transit listed, there are also car sharing programs where you can pay to use a car for a few hours or so. One of these is http://www.zipcar.com

Berkeley is like the big hippie city and I lived in the smaller hippie city of Santa Cruz where hitchhiking was still alive and safe. I don't know how safe Berkeley is for hitching rides. I haven't heard of any ride sharing system like you mentioned, ever. But now that you mentioned it, it seems there is one in the Berkeley area: http://www.ridenow.org/carpool/

  2. No, there is no casual carpool system in Berkeley.

There is AC Transit bus, BART rail, and UC Berkeley shuttles.

  3. There is a casual carpool that picks up at North Berkeley BART. Usually, those poolers are going to the South Bay and into the City (although you'd think it's just be easier to take BART into the City).

Personally, I wouldn't trust a casual carpool. The driver could take you anywhere and gut you like a fish, then throw your corpse into the Marina.

However, if you really wanna rideshare, I'd say look on Craigslist. There's always people looking for toll-buddies. My friend commutes from Rockridge to the City everyday. He got a carpool together on Craigslist.

If you are looking for longer-distance rides, you can call the KALX Ridefinder at 642-KALX.

If you are going to be a student at Cal, get the AC Class pass. It's a pass that you stick on your Cal ID that gets you AC bus rides all semester long. It's awesome!
