  1. All of America appreciates Joe Louis.

  2. I'll bet You 95% of Black America doesn't even know who He WAS (& THAT goes for Jackie Robinson- too!!!) !  :(

  3. There may be a ring of truth to what Joseph is saying in that maybe its because he's not disrespecting women, in a gang and basically being an ********.  That could be one of the reasons.  He was from a different generation where you didn't need to be in a gang to be respected.  In fact he didn't like gangs and I remember reading that in his autobiography.

  4. No, sad to say they don/t even realize his significance. They would rather see a slam dunk or something that insignificant.

  5. They should.  Perhaps the black communities in the US would do well to incorporate the likes of Joe Louis into studies of black history.  It seems that black athletes making the headlines for all the wrong reasons are the ones that are looked up to and emulated by the urban youth in America.

Having said that, I personally view what Joe Louis did and what he stood for in a larger context than just an ambassador for black athletes.  He inturrupted his professional boxing career to fight for the US during the second world war.  When he finished his tour of duty he returned to the ring to fight another 3 years.

  6. Everyone appreciates Joe Louis, regardless of race, creed or color, Joe Louis will always be universally respected by anyone who has any realistic historical perspective.
