I think it's wonderful that we are excelling at something, however it's just a shame that most of the events that we have been most successful at, i would consider to be peripheral events, or i think it would be fair to say that none of them are 'blue riband' events.

However i think all golds are good for the country, and having been a sportsman myself i can only imagine the trainning regime that's required to produce top athletes, at whatever sport.

So all in all i say to all o fthe British squad .............

Well done.

  1. This is very rare for the Brits so enjoy now and London.

    GO AUSSIE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  2. i am so over the stupid olympics - oh so someone can swim a lap big ****

do a heart transplant, donate a kidney.  adulation is wasted on sport

  3. Yes, I am very proud by their acheivements. I wish I could be as motivated as them sometimes.

  4. Yes, well done.  But China has been very impressive, as the country joined the olympics body in 1984, and has since been progressing so fast.  No other country in the world could cut itself off, and then rejoin with such outstanding results.  Well done to China, too.

Currently, China is at the top of the table, either by number of gold, or by points based on medals tally.  Congratulations to all that have been providing such entertaining performances in the 2008 olympics.

  5. Sorry but the Poms suck! I can't stand them, nor the fact I have a 25% English bloodline (can't help bad luck). Aussie, Aussie, Aussie!!!

  6. yes totally - usually i am not patriotic, but i feel very proud that these sportsmen/women have trained and trained and have got their reward.

Like yourself i am (an ex) pro sportsman who knows what it takes to make the grade, and these guys who have put in hours and hours of effort have ensured that the feel good factor has been re-introduced into this country.

this is a direct reflection of what lottery funding can do!

  7. I think Team GM deserves to be extremely proud of its achievements and whilst I can take no credit for any of their success I do feel a great sense of national pride watching them on TV.  I am always impressed by how dedicated these sportsmen and women are and I hope that their great achievements inspire the next generation.

  8. Yes, but why are some Australian commentators such dickheads.

  9. Yes.

  10. yes it does

all humans are competitve by nature

so for our country to perform a particular sport and succeed in it against other countries it does carry a national pride thing..

  11. yep!

  12. Not with Ben Ainslie flying the union flag UPSIDE DOWN?

At the olympics. He is representing Britain and the flying national flag (often called the union jack) upside down in the newspapers of the world is a great insult to our national sports image

  13. Whatever the event, whether it be one of the more popular sports or not, the brits have done incredibly well in this years Olympics.

  14. Always nice to hear good news for a change!

  15. Yet they have yet to reach the top 3? IF I count this right the top 3 is........:       USA 74 Medals

                       CHI 68 Medals

                        RUS 38 Medals.

  16. "peripheral" events??

by Blue Riband events, do you mean the ones that are over-hyped by nations that have/always will exceed in them.

I mean come on! who says the shortest event in history, the 100m! is high-light blue riband event of the games and therefore receives the most coverage at the olympics.

I struggle to see much coverage of GB gold medal events, yet I am "treated" by being allowed to watch repeats of some guy who manages to run 100m in a straight line, about 148 times! Woopee!

I have been known to take the P!, out of the dressage event but that takes more skill than putting 1 foot infront of the other for a few yards down a flat track! but I digress..............

Having said all this, I too am an athlete, in many disciplines, and I salute ALL athletes whether in the olympics or not, for their hard work and determination and their will to succeeed at being the best they can. Whatever their chosen event!

Seeing any athlete on the rostrum in recognition for their talent/effort always manages to bring a tear to my eye!

But lets NOT get carried away that some sports are "more" than others.

Hey BooBoo! did you know that a lot of advances in science and medicine are due to athlete's being measured for performance or being treated for injury, so a little more perspective and peripheral vison is needed on your part.

And the medal table I see says China 39 Golds, US 24 and GB 13, so the Brits ARE third.

Oh yeah, its always good to see the Aussies given a run for their money, even if 4 countries have to be combined to do it!

  17. Well done Britain.

I am Australian and am happy you guys are doing well.

I still hope we win more but I like to see Britain do well.

Next Commonwealth Games we will have a challenge to beat you guys.
