I am currently considering the possibility of getting a postgraduate degree in Hong Kong. However, I am not sure if the degree will be recognized by Canada and United States. If anyone knows the answer, please help me. Thanks a lot!

  1. I think it depends on the field of study.  There's a big difference between Engineering and Medicine.

Check with the licensing body for the profession you want to enter.  If you want to become an Engineer in the province of Ontario, Canada, check with http://www.peo.on.ca/.  You'll need a B.Eng., at least 1 year of internship in the province, and they may ask you to write some extra exams, maybe not, depending on where your degree is from.

  2. I am in Canada and I have chinese friends in Canada with master and doctor degrees from China, but they cannot get professional jobs using those degrees.  One is a computer programmer and had to take high-school courses to start university over again, despite already having a master degree from China.  The other is an engineer whom I gave a job because she couldn't get an engineering job here;   and her husband is a doctor in China, but nothing here.  They would have to get the degree in Canada, or otherwise take courses over again and write Canadian exams to ensure everything is up to our tough standards.  I have a friend who came from China and got a master degree in Canada, and gets professional jobs very easily.

Its not impossible to succeed though.  My own family doctor got his medical degree from another country, I guess he went through extra courses and exams here too, and he's a successful doctor here now.
