Does Canada not allow immigrants with disabilities to enter their country?

This story breaks my heart because I was considering moving to Canada myself. I love your country.

Lets say a very affluent British family wanted to settle for farm life on the banks of Nova Scotia with a pretty little daughter who has a genetic disability and very few friends. And Canada welcomes this family and the little girl made friends on the green pastures and with tolerant friends and neighbors who greet strangers as friends. Such is suppose to be the culture of the maritimes I always thought!

This is what I thought Canada would think to be a beautiful story.

Instead, look what Canada did and how can Canadians explain this? It hurts my conscience. (see the link below)

Comment on it please.

  1. Well, it 's a sad story, but the first thing I thought was that they were a bit foolish to come here and buy property when they didn't have the paperwork in place to allow them to stay, especially since children are involved. A very short look at any Canadian immigration sites will tell you that you need to get all that sorted out BEFORE you come to stay.

This has nothing to do with the Maritimes, it has to do with national policies.

Every country has the right to say who they will and won't accept. Canada has had more than its share of people who just show up and expect that they'll be able to stay. These people don't get a whole lot of sympathy from me. They aren't political refugees fleeing for their lives, it doesn't sound like they're broke, English is their native language so they shouldn't have any trouble understanding the rules as they are set out.

  2. they should never have left england before their permanent residency was granted, anyone knows you cant do that

  3. Canada, like any other nation, reserves the absolute right to set it's own standards and rules about who we accept, or do not accept, to come here as Immigrants.

Because we have a national and universal health care system, that is open to ALL citizens , and legal immigrants, we do not want to assume the life long care of someone who is not going to be able to be self supporting,  by working in Canada.  Just because this  family has money now does not mean that they will have it in the future.

Canada does NOT owe the world a living , nor a place in which to live. We expect that people who are accepted to live here will be able to support themselves by working and paying taxes into our economy.  We have to set standards, and we have done so. Not every one will be accepted, for many reasons.

UK citizens may VISIT  Canada, for up to six months at a time, with out the need for a visa. Immigration is a seperate  matter, with much more stringent rules.

  4. Unless you didn't know, Canadian immigration is highly restrictive. Unlike the US, where immigration is based on a lottery system skewed towards diversity, Canadian immigration is based on a points system.

You get more points for being a young adult, educated, wealthy, and by having family in Canada. You will be excluded if you have a pre-existing medical conditions or a criminal record.

If you are a old (over 50), poor, uneducated person with no family in Canada and have diabetes, you are SOL in Canada. If that same person happens to be picked via a random lottery in the US, they are welcomed with open arms.

  5. "they were told by a border guard that because Lucy, seven, is disabled she would never be allowed into the country"

I have a problem with the entire article but especially with the above. The people at Citizenship and Immigration Canada determine who is allowed in and who is not, not a border guard.

A border guard however, knows what paperwork he is to look for and if you are supposed to have it and don't, then he is doing his job by turning you back.

I rather suspect that parts of a conversation are out of context and are being used more to sell papers than anything else. Having a handicapped child is not a reason to disallow a family in.  Not having the proper paperwork that gives new immigrants the possibility to get medicare is a reason to deny you. Not having a work permit is a reason to deny. I suspect that if the child had any part in the denial, it was because the paperwork allowing the adults to work and thereby contributing to the medicare needed by all parents for their children, was in question or was lacking.

  6. natural selection, they'd be dead anyways, Canada is just speeding up the process of evolution, we'll all be super humans soon, and we'll have Canada to thank.
