Does Caroline Wozniacki deserve the number one spot? Part- 1

The women’s game of tennis has a new top ranked player as Caroline Wozniacki has jumped into the number one position after getting the better of world number thirty four Petra Kvitova in a total of two sets at the China Open in
Beijing last week.
The player she defeated could hardly have been more fitting. Petra actually blew Caroline off the court in the round of sixteen at the grass court Grand Slam tournament, where she dismissed her in a lopsided two setter clash. Avenging
the loss with a new number one in the WTA world ranking on the very first occasion in her career, must be sweet for the Dane.
Just twenty years old, the blond and charming Dane has placed herself into an elite company. Only nineteen other female tennis players have held the number one ranking from Chris Evert to Martina Navratilova, Martina Hingis, Kim
Clijsters, Monica Seles, Steffi Graf, Maria Sharapova, Williams sisters, Justine Henin and other great names along the way.
Now the question here is that, will the professional tennis player from Denmark, Caroline Wozniacki going to be another Dinara Safina, Ana Ivanovic or Jelena Jankovic; all of whom slipped in the WTA rankings list after they jumped
to the top level in the world? Or is she going to dominate on the tour and sustain her position for longer period of time like Serena Williams and few others?
The number one position has looked to be a curse rather than an honour to contenders like Jankovic, Ana and Safina.
Dinara Safina, by all means is the biggest example without any question. She was consistently asked by the media about whether she deserved that spot or not when she was not even a major winner and the former top ranked Serena
Williams did her best to add fuel to the fire by dismissing Dinara's wins in the premier competitions leading up to the Roland Garros.
Dinara collapsed, got injured, struggled and has never actually been the same since.
Therefore, is the same in store for the new world number one Caroline who as opposed to Dinara, in fact snatched the top spot from Serena?
There is no doubt about the fact that such kind of question will definitely be raised by the media in the next couple of days as the Dane is another number one without even winning a single Grand Slam title so far in her career.
In fact, she has not even made it into the title battle of any major event in 2010 and besides her final four appearances in New York; her major performance has been all but impressive for a top ranked tennis player in the world.
So is tennis really all about the majors? Eight weeks a season and the rest of the year is worthless?
Williams in contrast to Caroline has played a total of seven championships this season, partly as a result of her foot injury that now looks to be almost gone. Caroline on the other hand, has contested in a total of six competitions
since Wimbledon alone. She triumphed in four of them, out of which two were premier events.
The Danish tennis star has improved her game and added more victories to her name. She is still a counterpuncher and perhaps the best defender on the tour however the days are definitely gone when one would say that she has triumphed
in a clash just because her foe didn’t play up to the mark. Even though they still at times do play poorly on the court, but not because of their game, in fact because Caroline pushes them too hard and proves too strong for them in the end.
With a total of four championship wins, she is undoubtedly the inform contender on the tour and by far the most consistent player in 2010.
Therefore, one can definitely say that she has earned the world number one ranking.
