Does Caroline Wozniacki deserve the number one spot? Part- ll
The tennis calendar is reaching its climax with competitions in Osaka, Shanghai, Bali, and at last Doha and London. Meanwhile, the professional tennis player from Denmark has earned her spot at the number one in the WTA ranking
list on the tour.
With the new rankings released this Monday, a couple of critics have already started raising questions like the previous season of whether the twenty year old Dane, Caroline Wozniacki actually deserves the number one spot in the
world.
Unfortunately, the WTA back in 2009 was marred by a couple of battles between the top ranked Dinara Safina and second ranked Serena Williams. Safina was ranked number one in the world however had not captured a single major title
yet like the current number one Caroline. Williams, off course upset, stated that Dinara didn’t deserve to have the top spot in the rankings as she had not even proved herself to the WTA. Dinara responded by saying that no one has said the same to Jelena Jankovic.
This season is exactly the same story with a new setting. However, only few are complaining about the Dane, Caroline. Although, she has played quite well throughout the year and her game has also improved to a tremendous level
along with speed and consistency but she has not won a single Grand Slam in her career.
In fact, unlike Dinara, who had been to two title battles prior  tojumping to the top level, Caroline has just advanced into a single major final to clinch the number one spot.
So why it is Dinara who was criticized the most whereas Caroline and Jelena reached the number one position back in 2008 were not?
Caroline has participated in a great variety of tournaments this year and has contested in nearly every week of the calendar year. Unlike Serena, it looks like Caroline attempts to focus on small competitions. She has so far only
made her way into a single major final, back in 2009 at the United States Open in New York. In spite of the fact that capturing a major trophy is not the only factor to consider towards deserving the highest spot on the WTA tour, it is certainly a very important
factor.
The twenty year old Dane unfortunately does not have the mental strength in the majors, falling to Francesca Schiavone, Vera Zvonereva and Li Na.  She however does have some backing as Caroline has captured a total of six trophies
in 2010 with her most recent one at the China Open in Beijing where she got the better of Vera Zvonereva from Russia in the title battle.
However, according to some of the experts, the reason why Caroline has won six competitions in 2010 is because she has participated in a couple of minor tournaments, with very few top ranked contenders as her opponents.
There is certainly nothing extra ordinary about this twenty year old. She does not have an outclass volley, backhand or volley. The only thing Caroline can be praised for is her pace and court coverage. But then, some believe that
Kim Clijsters or Venus Williams could out shine her in speed.
Coming back to the question of whether or not she deserves to be ranked number one in the world? The straightforward answer to it considering her overall stats is NO! However she has the chance to prove her sporting aptitude and
flair at the season ending event in Doha and next season’s four major tournaments.
At the moment, we all hope that she won’t turn into another Jelena Jankovic or Dinara Safina.
The year 2011 will definitely be very interesting as it will show how strong is the twenty year old Caroline in terms of handling the pressure of being the top ranked player in the world.
Will Caroline handle it successfully or will she fall?
