  1. sophisticated people are very european? hahaha they are latin like everyone else in Chile, they aren't EUROPEANS.........99% hasnt been in Europe nor they care.......please. Stop stereotyping the europeans like if they were the best of something because they are not, they only thing they did is went to Chile and robbed what they could.

  2. Chile is a beautiful place and a guide is not needed.  If you don't speak Spanish, I recommend that you get a phrase book, makes a good one.

The website http://www.chile-travel.com/ is a great resourse and the regions are broken down.  The Patagonian area is lovely, lots of hiking and from Punta Arenas you can take flights to Antarctica, but remember that they are in the Southern Hemisphere and our summer is their winter.

One thing to remember on your first visit to Chile - you have to pay $100 cash or credit card.  This is in place of a visa, it's an airport tax.

  3. If you speak Spanish, have extensive international traveling experience, and have sufficient time to spend planning the details of your trip, you probably don’t need a guide. Chile is safe and has really welcoming people.

This is the only guide I advice:

  4. Chile is in the Southern Hemisphere.  Summer starts on December 21 to March 21.  Sophisticated people and very European, lovely country from Santiago south to Puerto Mont and beyond.  I never felt more safe and you do not need a guide.  Buy the 'South American Guide Book' by Lonely Planet or another publisher

  5. Santiago is a very nice city that you may visit without a problem. Of course, you may take some precautions like not walking alone at night in deserted areas.

I would recommend to spend at least four or five days so you may see the city and also have the time to go to the areas close to the city (Valparaiso and Viña del Mar / Isla Negra, where another of Neruda's homes are at / a Vineyard).

Go to the southern most part that you can.  The farther away, the better and more amazing!
