Question:

Does China have a chance to catch the US in total medal count?

It seems like China kinda banked on sniping golds in a lot of obscure events, and of course they showed strong in gymnastics and diving, but those are for the most part over now - does the US have a better "strength of schedule" going into the home stretch of the Games, with basketball and soccer and softball and the track and field events? Will the US expand its overall medal count lead, if not overtake China in gold count?

Not that the US is a powerhouse in all those, but just they're more likely to medal in the latter half events, it seems, than China would be.

  1. USA seems to be the only country that counts in total medals won.

China currently have won more events than any other nation.

    Get over it.

  2. they already have and are ahead

  3. I think the question is: Does the US have a chance to catch China in gold medal count? As far as I know it is gold medal count that is used for final ranking, not total medal count. Just image: if all US medals were bronze (just bear with me on this scenario) and if all China medals were gold but yet total medal count favoured US, would you say US has outperfomed China? Just a thought....

  4. Well, it they give their BEST they probably have a solid chance. But China is going to be the country with the most gold, period.

  5. Perhaps a day will come when someone with a brain actually cares.

  6. US will win.  We are the best!
