  1. Are we talking about chauffeurs, like the people who drive limousines, or are  we talking about the old term for a license issued to a commercial truck driver?

In either case, there are some DOT rules that apply, but the DOT does not issue licenses.  That is left up to the individual states.

  2. Which one are you talking about...a truck driver or a limosine driver? Each state in the U.S. and each Province in Canada regulate their own licencing requirements. The D.O.T. is just there to enforce the laws at the provincial and state levels. For example...a truck driver hauling a Super "B" in Canada can carry the following. On the steer 5,500kg, Drive axles 17,000kg, Tridem axles 24,000kg and rear or pup axles 17,000kg. However, in Saskatchewan and Manitoba the tri's are only allowed to be 23,000kg. It is up to the DOT at the weigh scales to flag violators and they frequently do. Also on the same token as another comparison...the law in BC for a straight truck with a tri axle trailer is 105,000 pounds...in Washington state you are allowed this, but you must have a drop axle truck. There are many rules and regulations and chauffeurs if you are meaning a limo driver are not considered commercial drivers (there is a weight limit which is 4,500kg) and are therefore exempt from the DOT. However, a peace officer can still stop them for road side safety violations...ie lights out, etc. In licencing classes...here in BC, they are considered a class 2. A commercial transport driver is classified class 1 which supercedes all licences here except for class 6 wwhich is motorbikes. Class 3 is tandem axles like dump trucks and fire trucks. class 4 is emergency vehicles like police vehicles and ambulances, class 5 is cars, class 6 is bikes and class 7 is learners. Hope this helps.

  3. yes they do, but they are no longer called chauffeurs licenses, it a cdl,

  4. I believe chauffeurs licenses are regulated by each state.  There is no national regulation so it comes down to state regulations and reprocity between states.

  5. Yes but it differs from state to state and it has also changed names, example a CDL is in some states is now known as a Chauffeur's License).

  6. No, chauffeurs licenses are regulated by each state's Secretary of State or Department of Motor Vehicles.

I've heard of a few states that have merged their chauffeurs license with a Commercial Drivers License.

Here in Michigan, there is still a chauffeurs license.
