Gary Carter is in...they both played the same number of seasons.

Parker has better numbers across the board-Both missed at least 2 seaons etc.... I am not saying Carter doesn't belong-I'm only using him for comparison so he's not part of the question (i'm not doubting his Hall election)

but I'm asking if Dave Parker belongs based only off numbers?

Parkers numbers are equal to that OR BETTER THAN at least one hall of famer.

this question came up while looking at player profiles over at baseballreference.com

i'm bored..what can i say...

  1. yes,, but they try and keep all black players out as much as possible...that is a hall of Shame.. look at all the bigots and racists inside.....

  2. He's not shoo in material by any means but should be considered. No comparison to Carter who was also a very good defensive catcher year after year while Parker was iffy at best in the OF (although his 3 best years netted him the Golden Glove). Carter also leads in league MVP 2-1.

I do see your point though.

  3. Although, as you say, Parker has comparitive numbers with Gary Carter, it is very hard to judge a catcher versus an outfielder. Both players were also excellent fielders. One important thing sets the two apart, Carter had a great clubhouse impact while Parker was sometimes downright hard to get along with. However, judging Parker just on his talent alone, I would say he has an outside shot at the Hall of Fame. I'd compare him more with Jim Rice--good talent, but not quite good enough for the HOF.

  4. For one, Carter was a catcher while Parker was an outfielder.

For two, many, many non hall of famers are better than hall of famers like Phil Rizzuto, Bill Mazeroski, George Kell, Red Schoendienst, etc. All of his most comparable are borderline HOF, either in or out, or they played in a different era. It depends on whether you want to let all of these borderline players in as well. Not to say that he was bad, he's just like a longer lasting Shawn Green.
