  1. In VERY heavy rain or snow any KU band satellite feed will be lost. Dish uses KU band satellite.  The signal loss lasts only as long as the very heavy rain lasts.  Sprinkles or a normal rain storm do not affect it. . The phenomenon known as “rain fade” or “rain attenuation” it is  a weakening of the satellite signal as it passes through raindrops. It is caused by the absorption of a microwave Radio Frequency (RF) signal by atmospheric rain, snow or ice, and losses are especially prevalent at frequencies above 11 GHz.  where KU band satellites operate.

If you are worried think about how many times and for how long a real heavy rain or snow storm occurs.  Cable uses C-Band satellites that are not as effected by rain fade, but cable has outages do to problems with their lines and distribution equipment.

  2. When the satellite signal is distorted too much (which can occur when there's HEAVY rain or snow), any satellite service can be interrupted.  This phenomenon is called "Rain Fade."

Studies show that Satellite Providers' outages are about the same as cable providers over the course of a year.

  3. i have had both dish and directv and they both would go out in thunderstorms.
