So my friend told me fretboard warrior was a really good way to learn all of the notes on the fret board so i tried it, but it doesn't really feel like i am getting the notes. Is it a subconscious thing or are going to have to try and remember, and is it really worth it to spend time doing it

thanks

  1. Knowing all the notes on the guitar is not too difficult and it is worth knowing.

To really grasp music and especially music theory, then knowing what the notes are for each fret / string, is essential.

Basically just memorize the open stings (from top string [thickest] to bottom string [thinnest):  E, A, D, G, B, E.

Then realize that each fret is equivalent to a half step.

    Then know that the chromatic scale (all the notes in music, there is only 12 notes in all of music):  A, A#, B, C, C#, D, D#, E, F, F#, G, G#

So if you go 1 fret from the open E string, then that gives you an F.  The 1st fret of the open E string is an F.  If you go 3 frets, then that is one and a half steps, that gives you a G.  You move 3 spots on the chromatic scale.

So if you understand all the notes in music (again, there is only 12) and you memorize the open strings, then you know all the notes on the guitar.

Also if you just remember some "jump points" such as memorizing open strings, 5th fret notes, and realize that at the 12th fret everything repeats, so the 12 fret are the same notes as open strings.
