Does Gypsum have an effect on clays that are not Sodic?

Will I need to have my clay soil tested to see if it is Sodic or is there still a benefit in adding Gypsum even if it not Sodic?

my NC red clay totally ignores gypsum.... the only use here is its calcium content.... which I can get elsewhere.

and... a soil test is always a good bet!!!  "know to grow"
