  1. If you are not going long distances with your video/audio signal, then a cheap cable will absolutely do the trick.

  2. they matter in price and quality

  3. There shoudn't be any difference at all, HDMI is HDMI. Don't be fooled by fancy packaging or "gold" contacts, it's garbage, just get the cheap one.

  4. Lots of people say that HDMI cables are the same and that they tried both and couldn't tell the difference.

Here is what you need to know. Up until recently (the last year) the highest resolution you could transmit was 1080i. While it is HD most cheap HDMI cables had the speed to handle the full signal. But now new Blu-Ray and better HD DVD players can play 1080P and devices are adding new features (like controlling connected devices automatically) and while your old, lower grade HDMI cable might have been good enough to get a great picture from broadcast TV, It may not have the speed to handle the 1080P image or Dolby TrueHD or dts HD surround modes or transmit the control codes or whatever else they may add later on down the road. So to answer, yes there are differences even if some people haven't experience it. IF future technologies matter to me, or if I was installing a cable in the wall to a flat panel or ceiling mounted projector (a situation where I don't want to have to replace the cable down the road) I would definitely buy better cables. Unfortunately some of the midpriced HDMI cables don't improve the speed rating over cheap cables at all so are a rip off compared to expensive cables.

Monster is the biggest high quality manufacturer of cables in the world so everybody bags on them but I have seen independant testing that showed them as some of the best. They weren't the only ones but if you want to be sure of the quality they are the only ones listing the speed rating on the package.

  5. There's a reason we use gold connectors and it's not because gold is a great conductor. Gold doesn't oxydize over time!

As a regular cable ages and oxydizes you may see minor degradation in your picture or sound. HDMI, however, sends data constantly, back and forth between components while it's sending audio and video. If it looses one bit of data along the way, it changes the message. There is a long list of different kinds of trouble you will have when this happens.

Cheap cables, if they happen to work when you first plug them in, will work as well as good cables. But if you don't buy at least reasonably good cables, performance will degrade over time and you will likely be facing bizarre symptoms.

  6. Very much so. Just like other products, consumers pay for a recognized name. If your need for cable length is less then 15' , save yourself some $ and buy a mid priced product. If your need is greater then 15', consider spending a little more for a higher quality cable. A short transmission length will not suffer from a lesser expensive cable.

  7. Although it may seem like a scam, there are BIG differences in the quality of HDMI (and any other) cables.  There are differences in shielding, conductivity/resistance, and durability.  For what you're probably doing - hooking up components in your home theater - you will not see a noticible difference if you keep your cable lengths under 1 meter.  If you exceed that, you may start to see degrading of the picture and hear the sound quality lessen.  If you are already spending a lot of money on BluRay or HD-DVD products, you might as well maintain that high quality you were looking for when you decided to buy those types of players.  Go with the more expensive ones and you'll never have a problem (and if you do, they almost always offer a lifetime replacement warranty).  If you go with the lesser cable, you may not notice the difference, but chances are, it won't last.

btw - saying that the quality doesn't matter and you should buy the cheaper one because it's a scam is ignorant.  Quality DOES matter.  If it didn't, people wouldn't come to us over the thousands of cheaper production studios in Orlando!
