  1. HIPPA protects you by keeping others from accessing information about you that they do not need to know.  I am an RN in a hospital and per HIPPA I can only access patient information that i need to know to take care of that patient.  For example, if Famous person Joe Smith was a patient in my hospital and I looked up information about them i would be in violation of HIPPA.  Another example, if Patien John Doe's wife, brother, son, neighbor etc calls me and asks how he is doing blah blah blah , i am not allowed to tell them anything unless i get permission from John Doe

hope this clears things up for you.  if not , i have tons more info!

  2. It just affects people other the patient's access to the records.
