  1. No. There is no study of any kind to pick any side effect after Hibiscus Tea use. I to only know the positive aspects of this good herb.

  2. The research results I found said hibiscus has shown central nervous system depressant activity, hypotensive activity, and it also has antiestrogenic effects.

So, if you're depressed, or have low blood pressure, or have issues with low estrogen(most people have excess estrogen) I would not consume this tea.

The hibiscus plant was researched, among many others, at the New York Botanical Garden in coordination with the National Cancer Institute in a  search for medicinal plants from the America's that could be used for treatment for cancer and AIDS.

My source is the book "Rainforest Remedies: One Hundred Healing Herbs of Belize" by Rosita Arvigo, DN and Michael Balick, PhD

  3. Hibiscus, or rose-mallow, is a large genus of about 200–220 species of flowering plants in the family Malvaceae (the mallow family, along with members like cocoa, cotton, okra, baobab and durian) native to warm temperate, subtropical and tropical regions throughout the world. The genus includes both annual and perennial herbaceous plants, and woody shrubs and small trees.

The one used for a herbal tea is roselle (Hibiscus sabdariffa) also used as a vegetable and to make jams.

Healthy Bellies, you must be referring to some other subspecies like the ornamental Hibiscus syriacus or the Hibiscus rosa-sinensis because the one used for the tea does not have the properties you are describing. One have to be careful with herb which has more than two hundred species.

I do agree with Doctrine Mouse.
