Does Hilton Head S.C have a dark past?

I went to Hitlon Head S.C and I got very bad vibes from the city as soon as I got there. In the room I stayed at unexplained things were happening at night. Is there a past I should know about regarding the city?

You may notice that there are many plantations in Hilton Head. Hundreds of years of slavery may explain some of it.
