I remembered answering a similar question once, but the asker wanted to know about "Từ Dũ" street, which was changed into Đồng Khởi, not Tự Do.

no ,the  " tu do " street name has been changed in all cities that i know of .. and that is surprising because "tu do" [ liberty] is used in many of the countries mottos   "...tu do ,hoa binh, hanh P**c.."    "all we need is liberty, peace ,and happyness"...[ something like that]???

From what I've heard, it got changed to Dong Khoi, which means Uprising.  Ironical, isn't it?  The uprising led to the loss of Liberty.
