My friends and I want to go try a new Indian restaurant in town. My husband has never had Indian food and HATES onions and bell peppers. He thinks these two items are going to be in everything on the menu and doesn't want to go. I've only had home-cooked Indian food and don't know much about getting it from restaurants. Do you think he'd be able to find something on the menu he likes?

  4. Great News!  All Indian food does NOT have bell peppers and onions in it. There are many different varieties of ingredients with Indian food. A popular type of Indian food is curry which does not necessarily mean hot as it means the food is seasoned with a delicious blend of spices. You may order your curry with a lot of heat or no heat at all.

Indian food is usually made to order, so if a particularly interesting sounding dish contains the offending peppers and onions, you may ask to have them omitted or replaced with another vegetable.

My favorite Indian dish is Chicken Korma. It has nuts and raisons and a spicy sauce flavored with coconut milk. Your husband may prefer the Tandoori chicken. It's like the Indian version of grilled chicken but cooked in a very hot clay Tandoori oven (thus the name). It also has a reddish coloring from the spices and cooking method. Ask for some Naan bread as well. It is a soft delicious flatbread cooked in the above mentioned Tandoori oven. If your husband enjoys cheesesticks, have him try some cheese pakora appetizers. It is a firm homemade cheese dusted with chickpea flour and fried crispy on the outside. You can try the Veggie Samosas. They are divine, but may have an occasional onion inside. What a shame your husband will miss out. They are divine!

My meat and potatoes husband had never tried Indian food until I took him to one and now he's addicted! If these suggestions don't sound appetizing to your husband, don't feel guilty leaving him home, make it up to him by letting him pick the next dining adventure. Or, because he's such a great husband, he can suck it up for your sake and try not to be so closed-minded. Good luck and enjoy! :)
