Question:

Does Iodine really clean teeth?

I have recently been on a dental kick, after having a cavity scare which turned out just to be a tartar stain in the crevice of a molar. (I'm 20 and have never had a cavity)

My mother once worked as a dental assistant, and told me a story the dentist told her. He had said that when he was in school, the students would cheat on cleaning exams using iodine to break up and remove plaque and tartar. Is this true?

I am curious to know whether I can use it as a supplemental treatment with my regular dental exams. If it does work, I am sure my own dentist could not recommend it, as iodine is toxic. So before I go and poison myself for nothing, have any of you heard anything about this?
