  1. You can easily sub white sugar for brown sugar, no problem.  You WILL need the sour cream, for the flavor and texture to be right.  Maybe whip together a block of cream cheese and a little milk to sub?  Or some plain or vanilla yogurt?

  2. I'll tell it to you this way:

If cooking and you're missing an ingredient, substitute or leave it out.

If baking and you're missing an ingredient, go buy that ingredient.

Unlike cooking, baking is actually much more of an exact science. Not only do you need to pay careful attention to measuring correctly (right amount, right measuring cups [liquid vs dry]), but you also need those ingredients. Some things can be substituted, and for those you should look online as needed. If you have a cook book with a lot of baking in it, it may have substitutions for you as well.

However, brown sugar is one of those things you need, as is sour cream. Both add moisture. If you have cream cheese, beat it and dilute with a little milk and you can try substituting the sour cream, or you can sub it with Greek style (aka THICK) plain yogurt.

  3. Yes. Also, depending on the qty. of each missing product. If you only needed a little of light brown sugar, than I would say regular sugar will be ok. Also, for the sour cream, if you have cottage cheese, you can try that but it will change the outcome of the taste and texture of you cake. Try to go to the web and search " ingrediant substitution" maybe that will help.

  4. Well, the flavor with be a little different, but it's okay.  I see you have also * the sour cream.  Plain yogurt can be substituted for sour cream.

  5. You can substitute plain yogurt for the soured cream, or even sweet yogurt if you omit a small amount of the sugar

You can substitute white sugar plus a small amount of molasses for the brown sugar, but if you don't have molasses, you can be okay with white sugar, but you will have a slightly different taste and texture.

  6. definately its not goin to matter. go ahead and use white sugar......still it will be delicious.....ALL THE BEST!!!!!!!!

  7. not too much but dont expect it to taste the same.:) good luck

  8. stop being lazy and go to the darn store!  :)

  9. Brown sugar is simply white sugar with molasses added...and added generally for flavor.using plain sugar will be fine.

As for the sour cream...sour cream and butter milk are generally added to a recipe for their acid content.which is needed when using baking soda...the acid reacts with the soda to create leavening BUT your recipe also calls for baking powder which already has an acid added (Cream of tarter),so It was probably added for flavor and richness...so can be omitted entirely .

  10. Well sometimes it depends on how much it calls for. I would say though those ingredients seem to be key for this recipe so I would go to the store and buy them or make something on for what you have if you have everything else make chocolate cup cakes you really won't need sour cream for that. search on-line for other recipes for chocolate there are plenty of them out there. just google chocolate whatever.

  11. yes totally!

these two (soured cream and brown sugar) were in the recipe because they add the needed texture for the recipe

  12. I  believe you can use white sugar, but you do need the sour cream...

  13. You can sub plane yogurt for the sour cream, and the white sugar for the brown. But honestly its going to majorly change the outcome of the recipe. So  in all honesty you do need those 2 ingredients to make this cake turn out properly.

If you just want to make a standard chocolate cake and add the chunks of chocolate to it still, it wont be the same version but just as good. And heres the recipe I use I got from my family. Feel free to use and just add the chocolate chunks to it. Be sure to add a bit of flour to the chocolate chunks and coat them pretty well so they dont sink to the bottom of the cake.

    Easy Chocolate Cake:

    Ingredients

    1/4 cup butter

    1/3 cup sugar

    1 egg

    1 1/3 cups self-raising flour

    2 tablespoons cocoa

    200 ml milk

    Directions

    1Pre-heat oven to 350.

    2Grease cake tin.

3Mix butter and sugar until creamy.

    4Add egg.

5Add flour, cocoa and milk separately, stirring after each addition.

6Pour mix into prepared cake tin.

    7Bake for 30-40 minutes.

  14. some people use mayonaise instead of sour cream.

The substitute for sour milk or sour cream is to use fresh and add vinegar or lemon juice and let it sit a few minutes until it sours.

You need the acid of sour cream or milk to activate the the leavening.

Think of this too sour milke = fresh milk with lemon or vinegar.

Cream = milk with more butterfat.

You could try soured milk and add some more butter fat also.

  15. you can use white sugar but you need sour cream

pop into the local and buy some and while your at it buy brown sugar since your there already and its best to follow the recipie properly if you cant make it.

  16. you can use syrup to replace the sugar. and then you can use mayonaisse for the sour cream

  17. When you change ingredients or leave out things it changes the taste and texture.

You might want to make a quick trip to the store.

  18. yes....

  19. Your recipe calls for sour cream, you can leave that out, but chocolate is not an ingredient that is sweet naturally, instead of brown sugar you could use syrup in it's place, or white sugar.
