  1. I don't think the Sox keep Tek for his bat.He probable is the catcher that calls the best game in MLB and that is why they keep him.

He is also well respected in the clubhouse by teammates and management and is part of the glue that holds them together during tough stretches.

  2. yes he got plenty years left for jason

  3. As a lifetime Red Sox fan, I believe this will be is last season as a full time catcher. His contract is up this year and his offensive production is none existent. He is batting .204 at this moment with no light at the end of the tunnel.

Great career....time to retire and move into management.

    Great baseball mind.

  4. maybe a couple more.

  5. Depends on a few factors.

    1) What he and Boras push for a contract.  His hitting stinks this year, so he's not going to get a Posada like contract (also negotiated by Boras).

    2) The Red Sox farm system.  Right now, I don't think that they really have much on the farm who could step it up full time.  Maybe Epstein and Francona think differently though.

    3) The Free Agent Market and Trades.  I don't think that there are any other 'big name' free agent catchers this year, so there might be slim pickings there.  They may be able to trade for one though.

It's ultimately going to come down to what kind of contract they can get him to sign.  His offense is down, but he's still the best technical catcher in the majors.

Also, the Boston news reports broke with a story today that Tek and Mrs. Tek have filed for divorce.  It is possible that things on the homefront have been taking a toll on him and that could explain the bad year.

  6. 2 more years is my prediction

  7. There's a good chance he'll be resigned.  Yeah, he's only hitting like .215 but Tek is the reason the pitching is where it is.  Without him, the team ERA would jump at least one run.

    I give it a 50/50 shot he'll be resigned.

  8. Varitek is a free agent after this year and the Red Sox have not indicated what they plan to do.  My guess is that they resign him to a two or three year contract.

  9. This is the final year of his contract and he will be a free agent after this season.

The Sox have to be very careful about how they approach this in the off-season. You know Tek wants to stay here and play, but management doesn't want to put a lot of money into a .220 hitter, even if he is great with the pitching staff. Its a very thin line between a reasonable and insulting contract offer. But you also can bet that Tek is the first one to tell you he doesn't deserve a ton of money after this season's performance.
