  1. pig hooves

    yummy

  2. It's not *in* the gelatin, it *is* the gelatin. Gelatin comes from collagen, which comes from bones, cartilage, and connective tissue. Not vegetarian or vegan.

  3. Boiled bones and connective tissues.

  4. yuck ! never did like jello ....bd

  5. Gelatin (US spelling) or gelatine (British spelling) (used to make Jell-o and other desserts) is made from the boiled bones, skins and tendons of animals. An alternative substance is called Agar-Agar, which is derived from seaweed. Another is made from the root of the Kuzu. Agar-Agar is sold in noodle-like strands, in powdered form, or in long blocks, and is usually white-ish in color.

Some Kosher gelatins are made with agar-agar, most are not. Some things that are vegan that are replacing gelatin are: guar gum and carrageenan. Only some 'emulsifiers' are vegan. Gelatin is used in photography. Although the technology exists to replace photographic film, its price is currently prohibitive and there is insufficient demand. Hopefully, with the growth of vegetarianism and veganism, this situation will soon change

  6. All gelatin has that stuff. Yuck. Also watch out for yogurt with kosher-gelatin in it. Some Vegetarians eat common gelatin-containing yogurt brands like yoplait it without even knowing it. So check the lable whenever you reach for a container of yogurt. Not all yogurts have gelatin.

  7. yeeaa, it sucks but gelatin is made from the bone marrow of cows.  i'm not vegan so technically i can still eat it and call myself a vegetarian, but i think its a little gross.

  8. Gelatin is made from boiling the marrow, or something like that.  The pudding should be OK (still, check the label), but the fruit flavored stuff is not.

However, there are veg alternatives, that are made out of seaweed.  I found some in Indian markets in the US.  Only thing is that they don't come in cups, you have to mold it, so less convenient.

  9. Gelatin is derived from collagen, a protein found in animal skin and bone, it is extracted by boiling animal hides, skins, bones, and tissue after alkali or acid pretreatment.

  10. Gelatin IS an animal by product.  It's made mostly from the connective tissue (boiled) of pigs.

  11. YES.

  12. Yup, it's made from bone connecting tissue.

You can get vegetarian versions of a jello-like product, though, if you really want some. Veganstore.com sells some stuff, and if you google it or whatnot you should be able to find others easily enough.

  13. Gelatin doesn't have animal byproducts in it.  Gelatin IS an animal byproduct.

It's made by boiling bones, hides and connective tissue, usually from pigs, but cows and fish are also used.

Arielle, you said in answer to another question that you'd rather not eat dead animal flesh.  What do you think gelatin is?  It's dead animal; vegetarians don't eat dead animals.

  14. yep. pretty gross huh? =[
