Does John McCain believe abortion should be illegal?

Before answering either way, does the following statement he made on Jan. 25, 2000-- while he was trying to get nominated for president the first time-- make a difference? (CNN News--Jan. 26,2000)

"I would discuss this issue with Cindy and Meghan, and this would be a private decision that we would share within our family and not with anyone else," McCain told reporters in New Hampshire on board his campaign bus nicknamed "The Straight Talk Express. "Obviously I would encourage her to bring, to know that baby would be brought up in a warm and loving family, but the final decision would be made by Meghan with our advice and counsel."

Abortions should be illegal. Abortions are murder. Is murder illegal?

In other words, he would want to have the choice for his family, but it should be illegal for everyone else.

John McCain is pro-life and has a 25 year record of voting pro-life in Congress and the Senate. He is for the protection of babies at the moment of conception. So yes, he believes it should be illegal.

As for digging up that dirt on how he would have a talk with his daughters -- that was a hypothetical from 8 years ago, and he didn't mention whether he believed his daughter should be punished for whatever choice she ultimately decided to make, only that the choice should be hers. It would still be illegal if she made the 'wrong' choice in McCain's eyes.

I am more of a moderate on that point.

Against late term abortions - for complete legal access to early term abortions.
