Being hard of hearing can drive you crazy.

I knew a Captain in the Air Force who cracked up after he lost his hearing and was grounded.  He had graduated from West Point and expected to become a general.  He began wearing a general's hat (with the scrambled eggs on the bill) and was finally given a medical discharge.  He claimed it was a "hardship" discharge.

A friend of mine was a Lt. Colonel who was on a board that investigated the Captain and told me the whole story.
