Question:

Does Mercury have a breathable atmosphere?

I was reading this morning about it and noticed it had a small thin atmosphere, however it had nearly 50% oxygen, and the rest don't seem to deadly to me. If a person landed here and could survive the extreme tempretures, cosmic rays etc, could they survive? Or is the atmosphere simply to thin?

  1. No..... The atmosphere is too thin.

  2. no way  the planet has a temperature on moten lead on the lit side and a temp of - 200f  on the dark side and almost no atmosphere

  3. Mercury practically does not have an atmosphere--given its small mass and gravitational attraction, it was never able to sustain one. This phenomenon is similar to what happened to the Moon and to most of satellites in the solar system. Because of the lack of the moderating influence of an atmosphere and its slow period of rotation around its axis, Mercury's surface temperatures are the most extreme in the solar system. In areas illuminated by the sunlight, the temperature can soar to 750 K, while on the dark side of the planet it plummets to 150 K.

  4. s***w the atmospehere being too thin

the oxygen count is extremely high!

dude 50% oxygen would kill us in a heartbeat.

    and any other animals

    especially aquatic animals

  5. Too thin------- and the temperatures will either cook you or freeze you.

  6. The atmosphere is to thin and mecury has too may gases so a human is unable to survive

  7. Mercury has no real atmosphere at all. Since it is in relative proximity to the sun, it receives gasses from the solar wind, and some gasses are produced by the radio-active decay of elements in the rocks that constitute the planet, but owing to the planet's low gravity and solar wind, gas do not accumulate and vent quickly into space. Pressure would be nearly indistinguishable from perfect vacuum. You'd surely cannot breathe it.

  8. Because Mercury is so small, it doesn't have enough gravity to hold a dense enough atmosphere for breathable air.  Anyway, 50% is pretty high. . .Earth has about 21% oxygen, I think, and the rest is nitrogen, except for traces of other gases like carbon dioxide and others.

  9. no the atmosphere is to thin
