those half-pieces (the bottoms only) are always worn so close to the groin. talk about major hipsters in swimwear. but, boy, does Phelps have the torso to pull it off.

Michael's precious junk is very well protected, padded and streamlined by that freakin' awesome Speedo LZR Racer suit.  No need for a jock strap when you have super magical technology.  The suits fits him into a sort of "girdle design", optimal for good form while swimming, and carefully pouching his man stuff.

Those special suits are so tight, they don't need to.  It can take them up to 30 minutes to get the suit on because its so tight.

I have seen that some swimmers wear traditional racing suits under the new speedo fast-suits that made the news.  I do not know about Phelps, but I have seen one female swimmer with an old style swim suit underneath as well as one male who pulled his fast-suit down and had a speedo style racing suit poking out the top.  But a jock would be too thick and slow him down.
