Question:

Does Mike Mussina win 20 this year?

Mussina is sitting on 16 wins; he never has won 20 in a season. Is this his year?

It's September, and the Yankees are gasping.

Let's review.

If the Yanks stick to a five-game rotation, Moose will pitch:

today (02-Sept) in Tampa -- a visitor's house of pain;

in Seattle;

against Tampa at Yankee Stadium;

against Chicago at YS;

in Toronto;

and then, maybe, in Boston on short (4 day) rest.

Or, on a strict five-day rotation:

in Tampa;

in Seattle;

against Tampa at YS;

against Chicago at YS;

in Toronto with an extra day's rest;

and then in Boston, on normal rest.

Doesn't change the opponents any, and only one of the Yankees' two off days makes an impact.

Six games, only two at home, and among which only Seattle is a pushover. Mussina needs four.

Whaddya think? Does he make it? Can the Yanx come through enough for his pitcherly efforts?

  1. Even if He does win 20 The Yankees will still be watching the playoffs on TV. Stick a fork in them, they're done.

  2. I hope so.  A 20 win season might push him into the HOF.  He is on the borderline right now.  He could do it, as he has done very well against the Rays all season and I am guessing toronto will be out of it by the time the yanks play them. The BoSox one should be interesting, depending on where they are in the standings.  Even though they enjoy beating the yanks, if they clinch the WC a day or two before, mussina should win that one but not, all bets are off.

  3. I would love it if Mussina will win 20 games he is one of the few Yankees left that I respect. I think that if nothing goes wrong and if they give him some run support he will win the 20 games.

  4. I think so, he has never won 20-games in his career.

  5. Highly unlikely. Wouldn't bet on it. The way the Yankees offense are looking right now (inconsistent and playing with no urgency) and with his last 5 or 6 probable starts are against teams over .500 (two with tampa!), Moose would be sitting 1or 2 wins short.

    Yes, he's having a great season but he won't be reaching the 20-win plateau. Sorry.

  6. i hope he gets 20 wins, not only would it be the first time in the mooses career but it will also be the only good thing that would happen this year for the yanks since they prob. wont make the playoffs

  7. I am a yankees fan so i am obviously biased. Still, he would have to win 4 out of his next 6 starts, and that is a very difficult thing when you are playing 2 teams in the pennant race.

    So i am going to say it could go either way even though i really want it to happen.

    Tampa-win

    Seattle-win

    Tampa-loss

    Chicago-either way

    Toronto-win

    Boston-either way

    It is a definite possibility.

  8. don't know about mussina doing it. but cliff lee ALREADY has this year!!!

  9. well from what the yanks did last year winning the wild card by a hair, i think when the Yanks get a challenge they will try too hard and fail. But the pitchers who have been the veterans of late have been sound and may have a few good starts. As for Moose, i think he will come short by one win.

    -Tampa he's 2-0 this year Win

    -Seattle, well they suck so Win

    -Tampa, the Yanks are doing good off them but i don't think he would win but instead 5 2/3 innings with a No Decision

    -Chicago, a loss due to Chicago's fight in winning the central

    -Toronto, If Halladay or burnett are not pitching, hands down WIN

    -Boston, sorry but the sox have already won the Wild Card so  the yanks are all sad and don't care anymore Loss

    So he finshes 19-9 but he is a Hall Of Famer when he gets 300 wins.
