I bought a Samsung 52" HDTV. The guy at Best Buy told me that I have to buy a $299 Power Center Surge protector to extend my TV life and get good picture quality. Basically, it cuts out any electro magnetic inteference and protects againsts electric surges. Is it really better than a good old $9 surge protector? Would it make a difference and extend my TV life?

  1. you are being raped by the best buy sl ut.

If you really need the peace of mind, there are much cheaper alternatives than the over priced, over hyped "Monster" brand.

  2. It will protect your TV, but it probably will make little or no difference in picture quality.  The markup at stores like BestBuy on accessories is much higher than what they make on TV's - that is why they push them so much (and maybe a little white lie or two).

I would recommend getting a good entertainment center power protector that includes a protector for cable or satellite (probably less than $50).
